Daniel M. Carey, clerk of the city of Hartford for 16 years, was found dead this morning in his South End home, authorities said. He was 51.
City firefighters went to Carey’s home after co-workers grew concerned when he failed to show up for work, Mayor Eddie Perez’s office said. Cause of death was not disclosed.
He had been city clerk since Jan. 1, 1993.
“This is truly a great loss for all of those he touched through his kindness and community service,” Perez said in a statement. “Dan was devoted to Hartford and his loss truly leaves a void in all of our hearts.”
The city said it is providing grief counseling through human resources to employees who request it.
Carey, who had deep Irish roots and lived in Hartford for more than 40 years, was honored earlier this year by the Central Connecticut Celtic Cultural Committee as “person of the year” and was a marcher in its St. Patrick’s Day parade last March.

Reader response:
“It is with deep sadness and shock that I learned about the loss of Dan Carey through your online business journal on Friday. I work remote in DC and took this news very hard. Dan “Danny” was a kind soul who was always willing to help in anyway he could. This is a huge loss for Hartford, his family the people of Connecticut. Dan will be personally missed by many but also by our Board of Directors and the staff at the GHCVB. We will remember Dan for his big heart and amazing charisma. He was a great person and friend.” — Karen Staples, Greater Hartford Convention & Visitors BureauÂ
