Hartford Business Journal Women In Business 2011 – Judges

Nancy Bernstein

Nancy Bernstein is president of Women’s Health Connecticut in Avon, which supports a network of over 200 physicians and other health care professionals. Bernstein also oversees the Clinical Trials Division of Women’s Health USA.  Before Women’s Health, she held management positions at various community and academic hospitals and health systems. She received her master’s from Harvard University in health policy and management, and her bachelor’s from the University of Pennsylvania.  She serves on the boards of Community Health Charities, Connecticut Center for Primary Care and United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. She received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010 from the Hartford Business Journal.

Mary Ellen Dombrowski

Mary Ellen Dombrowski has led the Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce as its president since 2006. During her term, the chamber began an award-winning Wellness Program for small businesses, which has been replicated by other chambers; developed cluster groups for Women of the Workforce, Glastonbury “Creatives,” retailers and restaurants and started both a Tactical Networking Team and a Health & Wellness Council.
The Glastonbury Chamber was established in 1902 and is the largest single-town Chamber in Greater Hartford. It realized a 21 percent membership growth in 2010.
Before joining the chamber, she was executive director of the Independent Electrical Contractors New England, executive assistant at the Greater Hartford Chamber of Commerce and a partner in Capers Fancy Foods & Confections.

Jennifer Smith Turner

Jennifer Smith Turner is CEO of Girl Scouts of Connecticut, the largest organization in the state serving girls. Girl Scouts of Connecticut is Connecticut’s recognized girl empowerment organization – providing over 65,000 girls and adults with opportunities and experiences that develop their potential and empower them with self-confidence and leadership skills to improve their lives and the world around them.
Prior to this, she was president/CEO of Smith & Associates LLC, a management consulting, strategic planner, and executive coach. She is the former deputy commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. Turner served as President/CEO of BerkleyCare Network and Vice President of W. R. Berkley Corp.
Previous that, Turner was with Aetna Life & Casualty and Travelers Insurance. She also worked in the 1980s as the city of Hartford’s personnel director and assistant city manager.
