A Hartford cannabis cultivator is seeking permission to open a retail store in the city’s Upper Albany neighborhood.
The Goods THC Co. plans to occupy a 2,167-square-foot space at 1500 Albany Ave., according to a special permit application filed with the city Sept. 2. The special permit is being considered by the Planning and Zoning and Inland Wetlands commissions.
Founded by Hartford native Gloribel Diaz, The Goods THC operates a cultivation facility at 275-287 Homestead Ave., also in Upper Albany, according to the company. The facility has seven flowering rooms used to grow cannabis.
The company plans to renovate existing office space for the new Albany Avenue store and add or update signs, according to the application. No demolition or building expansion is proposed.
The property is owned by Blake & Grant LLC, which authorized The Goods THC Co. and law firm Kennelly & Associates to seek the special permit. The LLC purchased 1500 Albany Ave. in 2024 for $1.3 million. It is controlled by Gary Blake and Ricardo Grant, who list business addresses in Waterbury and St. Albans, New York, respectively, according to state records.
The proposal comes amid changes in Hartford’s cannabis retail market. Curaleaf recently announced it would close its dispensary at 92 Weston St. and open a replacement location in Meriden.
The Weston Street dispensary, which had operated as a medical cannabis facility since 2016, was Hartford’s first to offer recreational sales. Other cannabis retailers in the city include Insa, at 167 Brainard Road, and Hi! People, which opened at 306 Market St. late last year.
