Hartford-based architecture firm expands Boston office as part of regional growth strategy

Hartford-based Amenta Emma Architects has relocated its Boston office to a larger space to accommodate the firm’s ongoing expansion in the New England market.

The architecture and design firm moved to 285 Summer St., in Boston’s growing Fort Point area, across the channel from its previous location at 190 High St. in the city’s downtown Financial District.

The new office spans about 15,000 square feet — three times the size of the previous one — providing additional space and resources to support 11 employees, and to take on larger, more complex work, the firm said.

The expansion comes as Amenta Emma pursues an ambitious 10-year strategic plan launched in 2023 to double its staff size, aiming for 60 to 70 employees by 2033.

“Boston continues to be a powerful driver in our firm’s growth,” said Michael Tyre, president of Amenta Emma. “Clients here have helped us build a reputation for design leadership that combines innovation with purpose and this expansion will assure that continues well into the future.”

The Boston office, led by Principal Eric Weyant, has taken on several new projects, including multifamily developments that will add more than 1,000 housing units to the region, as well as higher education projects at MIT, Boston University and Dartmouth.

“There’s enormous demand across the region for thoughtful housing and community development,” Weyant said. “We’re working on projects that are knitting together neighborhoods and towns and responding to regional needs while raising the bar for design.”

The firm said it has recruited emerging and senior designers to join its Boston team.

Founded in Hartford in 1985 by Anthony Amenta and Robert Emma, the firm has offices in Hartford, Boston and New York City. Amenta stepped down as president in 2024, with Tyre becoming president in January after serving as president-elect.

Amenta Emma remains headquartered at 242 Trumbull St. in downtown Hartford, which is being considered for an office-to-apartment conversion. The firm has renewed its lease there for another three years.

The firm’s three main focus areas are academic design, community projects including housing and public works and interior workplace design.

The firm recently received national recognition when its Jefferson House Hitchcock Wing renovation was honored with an American Institute of Architects design award for excellence in designing environments for older adults.
