Hartford attorney charged with tax fraud

An attorney operating a Hartford-based law firm has been charged for underreporting his income in tax returns filed almost a decade ago, prosecutors say.

Deron D. Freeman, 45, of Glastonbury, was indicted by a grand jury last week in New Haven federal court on two counts of filing false tax returns, the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

Freeman, an attorney operating The Law Offices of Deron Freeman in Hartford on Brainard Road, mainly handles criminal, civil and personal injury matters, among others. As of early 2018, the firm had approximately 1,200 clients, three associate lawyers and 11 para professionals.

According to investigators, Freeman understated his income and, as a result, his tax liability in both 2011 and 2012. Officials in a news release announcing the charges did not specify how much income Freeman allegedly underreported.

If convicted of the alleged crimes, Freeman faces a maximum prison sentence of three years on each count, prosecutors say. He is scheduled for arraignment on Sept. 10 in Bridgeport.

The investigation is being conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
