Seven area colleges and universities announced they are relaunching the Greater Hartford Consortium for Higher Education, renewing a collaborative partnership aimed at expanding academic opportunities and connecting students with local employers.
The consortium announced its relaunch Wednesday, with a public carol singing celebration planned for Dec. 15 at UConn Hartford to mark the occasion.
The member institutions — CT State Capital and CT State Manchester, Goodwin University, Hartford International University for Religion and Peace, Trinity College, UConn Hartford, University of Hartford and University of St. Joseph — originally established the consortium in 1972 to facilitate cross-registration and share academic resources.
The combination of the pandemic and changes in leadership prompted the consortium's board to pause operations.
New leadership at the member institutions prompted the relaunch.
The renewed effort expands that vision to include stronger employer partnerships and a greater role for higher education in Hartford’s economic development, the group said.
“This partnership is about more than just academics; it’s about recognizing that our colleges and universities are the engines of our future workforce and economic vitality,” Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam said. “By connecting these talented students directly to our local employers, the Consortium is ensuring that Hartford’s best and brightest start their careers right here.”
Mark Overmyer-Velázquez, the consortium’s board chair and UConn Hartford dean and chief administrative officer, said the partnership will work closely with city leaders and employers to connect students with career opportunities.
