Hartford 21 market closes permanently

The Market at Hartford 21, downtown’s long-awaited grocery store, is closed for good, after temporarily closing its doors in September.

Owners Ryan and Kelleanne Jones issued a statement on Friday saying the market would be closed permanently, according to an article by NBC Connecticut. The high-end market opened to much fanfare in March, hoping to be a big part of the city’s downtown revitalization.

City officials long sought a retail grocery store to cater to the growing number of downtown apartment dwellers. The March opening was attended by Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra and Peter Standish, senior executive for Northland Investment Corp., owner of the building formerly occupied by Hartford 21.

In addition to some of the usual grocery store fare, the Market at Hartford 21 offered higher end items, particularly through its full-service deli, salad and sushi bar.The businesses employed about 90 part-time workers.
