The Hannaford supermarket chain is ready to unveil the first supermarket that aims to meet a building industry group’s highest environmental standard.
Hannaford hopes that its new 49,000-square-foot store Augusta will earn “platinum” certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Chief Executive Ronald Hodge calls the store that opens on July 25 “a one-of-a-kind learning laboratory for environmental gains.”
Maine-based Hannaford built the store on the site of a former school. It says 96 percent of the demolition debris and 99 percent of the contents of the former building were either recycled or reused.
Hannaford says its store is expected to use about half as much energy as a typical supermarket of comparable size and amenities. (AP)
