Mission: Hands On Hartford, in partnership with others, strengthens community in Hartford by responding faithfully to people in need through programs that change lives and renew human possibility.
Background: Hands On Hartford leads the civic engagement movement in Greater Hartford by empowering individuals and teams of volunteers to accomplish large and small projects that address critical needs in Hartford. The agency partners with businesses of all sizes, congregations, community organizations, other nonprofits, individual donors and volunteers to put caring into action and make a difference in the community. Hands On Hartford is a proud affiliate of the national Hands On Network/Points of Light Institute.
Doug Sudell was recently appointed the fourth chief executive officer of Hands On Hartford, to succeed Paul Christie who retired after 25 years as its executive director.
Hands On Hartford, formerly Center City Churches, was founded in 1969 by a handful of downtown congregations as a shared basic needs ministry serving Hartford residents in need. Today, the organization employs more than a dozen staff and recruits hundreds of volunteers who provide a variety of social services including: providing children living in poverty with academic assistance; helping families who struggle to feed their children; assisting seniors who are barely making ends meet; and providing support to individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Programs include: Center for Youth, Manna Assistance and Advocacy, Manna Community Meals, Manna Senior Community Café, and Peter’s Retreat.
Major Fundraiser: Hands On Hartford is a major benefiting agency of Foodshare’s annual Walk Against Hunger, to be held on May 3. Hands On Hartford will host Summer Solstice Longest Day of Service on June 20 and 21.
