Hamilton lands contract with Russia’s Irkut

The global airline industry’s embrace of a novel jet propulsion system from Pratt & Whitney in East Hartford is paying dividends for another of United Technologies Corp.’s aerospace divisions.

Russian aircraft builder Irkut has contracted with Hamilton Sundstrand in Windsor Locks to deliver the electrical power generators for Irkut’s MC-21, a 150-seat airliner designed around Pratt’s PurePower geared turbofan engine, Bloomberg News reports. Terms were not disclosed.

The quieter, more fuel-efficient PurePower also has been chosen for a fleet of Canadian-built jetliners that, too, will compete with medium-range passenger planes from Boeing Co. and Airbus SAS by mid-decade. Pratt is also pursuing China’s jetliner market.

UTC is based in Hartford.
