Hamilton adding space-age touch to Stryker

Technology-systems maker Hamilton Sundstrand in Windsor Locks has been tagged to bring its know-how supplying electrical power to aircraft and space vehicles to upgrade the power packs for the Army’s next generation of ground-assault vehicles.

Hamilton is part of the contracting team headed by defense giant General Dynamics that will modernize the Army’s Stryker armored troop transport used in Iraq and Afghanistan, officials said.

The overall size of the contract and Hamilton’s share of it were not disclosed.

Hamilton’s task is to design a generator subsystem capable of generating 125 kilowatts – enough juice to power the Stryker’s communications and control systems, and military mission packages, the company said.

Hamilton says its Space & Defense division in Rockford, Ill., will oversee the initial ground work for the power pack that, along with other updated Stryker systems such as the powertrain, suspension and hull, must undergo two years of testing before deployment.
