Darien railroad operator Genesee & Wyoming Inc., which owns Hartford’s Connecticut Southern Railroad, said it shipped nearly 33,000 more carloads in the fourth quarter 2013 than it did a year earlier, an increase of 7.5 percent.
When accounting for the company’s 2012 acquisition of RailAmerica Inc. — a purchase that included CSR— freight traffic was up 105 percent year over year, the company said.
Coal was the biggest shipment category for G&W during the quarter, which grew by 25 percent.
G&W owns 111 short-line and regional-freight railroads in the U.S, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and Belgium.
