Gustafson rises on CT U.S. Attorney’s staff

The Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s office announced a series of staff appointments, leading with former Hartford office supervisor Michael J. Gustafson being named first assistant U.S. attorney.

U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly, who heads the New Haven-based criminal division of the U.S. Justice Department, announced the appointments. The district is composed of some 64 assistant U.S. attorneys and approximately 60 staff members at offices in Hartford, New Haven and Bridgeport.

“This supervisory team is a talented and experienced group of public servants who are driven by the cause of justice,” Daly said in a statement.

Gustafson has been with the U.S. Attorney’s Office since 1997. For the last four years, he served as chief of the criminal division, and previously as supervisor of the District’s Hartford Office and Chief of the Organized Crime Strike Force.

Before joining the Justice Department, Gustafson was in private practice for eight years, and served as a law clerk to both Senior U.S. District Judge T. Emmet Clarie and U.S. Magistrate Judge F. Owen Eagan. Gustafson is a 1983 graduate of Amherst College and a 1986 graduate of UConn School of Law.

William J. Nardini has returned as chief of the criminal division, responsible for enforcing federal criminal laws. Nardini joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in 2000, and previously served as chief of appeals. Raymond F. Miller remains unit chief.

Christopher M. Mattei is the new chief of the financial fraud and public corruption unit, which includes the Connecticut Securities Fraud Task Force.

In the Connecticut district’s Appellate Unit, Marc H. Silverman is the new deputy chief, reporting appellate unit chief Sandra S. Glover.
