Guilford scientist wins Conn. Medal of Technology

A Guilford-based scientist’s work on developing genetic sequencing technology has earned him the 2010 Connecticut Medal of Technology, the state’s highest honor for scientists and engineers, The Associated Press reports.

State higher education officials say they’ll present the award May 20 in Hartford to Jonathan Rothberg, who is founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Ion Torrent.

The Board of Governors for Higher Education says in a statement that Rothberg is being honored for developing genetic sequencing technology that will help improve the health of people worldwide. The board says Rothberg’s work in Connecticut has brought jobs and innovation to the state.

Officials say Ion Torrent’s new approach to genetic sequencing has produced a new sequencing system that’s simpler, faster and cheaper than any other technology.
