Guida’s latest dairy-plant expansion ready

Guida’s Milk & Ice Cream is preparing to occupy a 25,000-square-foot expansion of its New Britain dairy plant-headquarters. Several new jobs also were added, officials say.

Guida’s said the city has issued a certificate of occupancy for the second addition to its original 433 Park St. facility in 12 years. Work began in summer 2010.

Guida’s did not specify how many new employees were hired, except to say they were “locals.”

The newest expansion was a two-level plant addition. PDS Engineering & Construction Inc. was the general contractor.

Last weekend, Walker Crane & Rigging hoisted into place a stainless-steel, 50,000-gallon raw milk silo at the dairy plant portion of the site. The new silo allows Guida’s to store conventional and organic raw milk in separate towers.

The expansion will consolidate some off-premise operations to the central location, Guida’s said.

In 1999, the dairy added a large state-of-the-art cooler, pasteurizing room and laboratory.
