Groton duo honored for water pollution control

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday praised two Groton officials with its Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Excellence Awards.

Richard Stevens, Utilities’ Water Division general manager; and Kevin Cini, chief plant operator of the Utilities Wastewater Treatment Plant received the recognition for their long service to providing clean drinking water and non-polluting wastewater treatment facilities in New England.

Stevens had been general manager since 2000, overseeing drinking water and wastewater treatment. In June, he hosted a successful water security conference with utilities, state and federal officials.

Cini joined the plant in 1983 and became chief plant operator in 2004. During his tenure, the Groton treatment plant received national EPA recognition for its operations and maintenance.
