Greenwich Hospital announced it has received approval from the Connecticut Department of Public Health to expand its cardiac services by offering elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), also known as coronary angioplasty.
The approval of the hospital’s Certificate of Need application allows Greenwich Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Center to perform elective and urgent elective PCI procedures, in addition to the emergency PCI services it has provided for more than two decades.
PCI is a minimally invasive procedure used to open narrowed or blocked coronary arteries and restore blood flow to the heart. Hospital officials said patients who previously needed to be transferred elsewhere for elective procedures will now be able to receive those services in Greenwich.
The expanded program will use the hospital’s existing cardiac catheterization laboratories, equipment and clinical staff, and does not require new construction or major capital investment.
Greenwich Hospital is a 206-bed community hospital serving lower Fairfield County and Westchester County, New York. It is part of Yale New Haven Health.
