Greater Hartford exports up 4.9 percent in 2013

Companies in the Greater Hartford area exported $10.2 billion worth of goods in 2013, up 4.9 percent from 2012, according to data released this week by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The Hartford-West Hartford-East Hartford metropolitan area — made up of Hartford, Middlesex and Tolland counties — was the 33rd largest metro-area exporter last year.

It trailed behind Fairfield County, which had $11.1 billion in exports, ranking 30th.

The metro data comes after state-level data in February revealed Connecticut’s overall exports grew $550 million, or 3.5 percent, in 2013.

The top recipient of Greater Hartford exports was Germany. Canada was the area’s second largest customer. Transportation equipment was the largest export category from Greater Hartford. The region includes aerospace giant United Technologies.

Despite the state’s growth last year, through June 2014, exports are down more than 4 percent compared to the first six months of 2013, according to federal data.

The state’s $8.09 billion in exports for the first half of this year is at a four-year low. The first half of 2010 saw $7.81 billion worth of outgoing products from Connecticut.
