Grants for storm-damaged CT farms

Gov. Dannell P. Malloy today announced grants available for farms damaged in the tornado and related storm that hit East Windsor and Windsor Locks on Monday afternoon.

The Department of Economic and Community Development and the Department of Agriculture are offering $5 million in assistance under the grants, known as Production Loss Assistance Needed Today (PLANT) grants.

The agencies will work with the Connecticut Farm Bureau Association to administer the grants. Applications are due by July 15.

The National Weather Service reported the tornado to be an EF1 with estimated wind speeds of 86 miles per hour.

Citing the weather service, the Associated Press reported multiple trees down, some of which damaged homes and vehicles. The storm also knocked down the Sports World bubble dome, blowing some of the structure onto nearby Interstate 91, the AP reported. There were about 1,300 power outages as a result.
