Goodwin University to begin constructing state’s first technical magnet school next week

Goodwin University is set to break ground on a new magnet school in East Hartford next week, which will specialize in providing training for high school students in emerging technologies and professions.

The school, called RiverTech, will be Connecticut’s first technical magnet high school, according to an announcement from the Goodwin University Magnet School System.

The new school will be built on what is now a parking lot for Pathways Academy of Technology and Design, which is operated by Hartford Public Schools, at 2 Pent Road.

The magnet school will welcome its first cohort of high school freshmen in the fall of 2025. In the following years, it will add grades 10 through 12, the announcement states.

According to plans submitted to the town, the school will serve a total of 288 students in grades nine through 12. It will have about 36 faculty, administrators and visitors on-site daily, the plans state.

RiverTech will offer a range of fields of study, including: automation (drones, robots and industrial); production/fabrication (CNC machining, welding, quality control); system integration (electronics, design thinking); and SMART Factory (data analytics, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence).

Plans for the school show a four-story building with a futuristic design, clad with metal panels.

The school will share campus space with Pathways Academy of Technology and Design, and the Goodwin University Early College Advanced Manufacturing Center, located across the street at 3 Pent Road.

Goodwin University owns the properties at 2 and 3 Pent Road.

Goodwin University operates two main magnet schools: Riverside Magnet School (pre-K through grade 5) and Connecticut River Academy (grades 6 to 12).
