Goodwin College announced Monday it will now be known as Goodwin University, a move the school’s president says could help expand training partnerships with multinational corporations.
As part of the new designation as a university, Goodwin will break up its five academic departments into three schools: the School of Nursing and Health Professions; the School of Business Technology and Advanced Manufacturing; and the School of Applied Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
“Becoming Goodwin University is a natural progression for our institution,” said Goodwin President Mark Scheinberg, who added the move has been under discussion for nearly two years, and was approved by the New England Commission of Higher Education and Connecticut’s Department of Higher Education.
Additionally, becoming a university could encourage more corporations to enlist Goodwin for employee training and degree programs, Scheinberg said. That’s mostly because in many countries the word “college” is used to describe high school, while “university” is used to describe higher education.
With that terminology barrier out of the way, companies are more likely to send employees to degree programs at Goodwin University than they would to Goodwin College, Scheinberg said.
“I think it’s important to have folks note that our ability to partner with corporations is very much enhanced by this,” Scheinberg said. “This could be a real game changer.”
Goodwin College was established in 1999. The school enrolled just under 3,500 students in the fall, 2019 semester.
