Golfers raise $120,000 for Easter Seals programs

Easter Seals Capital Region & Eastern Connecticut has ably demonstrated that the tried and true ways of raising funds still work well.

The nonprofit’s 35th anniversary golf tournament held recently on Fishers Island produced $120,000. The funds raised at this signature event will support Easter Seals’ comprehensive medical and vocational services, which includes Easter Seals’ Autism Initiative.

Part of the appeal is the venue.

“The course design is spectacular and the scenery breathtaking,” said Michael Maglio, partner at Robinson & Cole LLP. “Regardless of your level of play, a Fisher’s Island golf experience is a must for your bucket list.” The Fishers Island course has been called the Pebble Beach of the East Coast.

And of course, there’s the competition for the Easter Seals Trophy of Hope.

Don’t forget the good cause.

But mostly it’s hard to overlook the fact that some people with deep pockets just like talking business while playing golf.

Major sponsors included Aon Construction Services Group, Brookbridge Consulting Services, Inc., Greenfield Partners, Robinson & Cole, and Stanley Works Black & Decker.

“The Easter Seals Golf Tournament is the oldest golf event in Connecticut,” points out Allen S. Gouse, executive director, Easter Seals Capital Region & Eastern Connecticut.

The reason is clear: It works.

Next year’s tournament is scheduled for Sept. 25, 2013.

The collaborative, born last year with the merger of Bianco Giolitto Weston Architects and Newport Collaborative Architects, is designing a cultural facility that will re-use the Oddfellows Playhouse. The first phase entails purchasing, renovating, and moving the playhouse to a new larger facility in downtown Middletown.

“NCA is honored to design a cultural facility that will re-use Oddfellows Playhouse,” said Managing Partner Jeffrey Dale Bianco. “The creative place making strategy will enhance Middletown’s cultural arts and improve the quality of life for all residents and businesses.”

Now in its 35th season, Oddfellows Playhouse provides innovative classes and productions that challenge young imaginations.

The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at NCA’s office at 500 Plaza Middlesex in Middletown. Oddfellows Troupe will perform a sketch from Shakespeare in the Night and the renovation project will be showcased.
