Glastonbury’s Smith Brothers Insurance acquires Mass. firm

Glastonbury-based insurance broker Smith Brothers has acquired a Massachusetts insurance agency in a continued effort to grow its presence throughout the Northeast region.

Smith Brothers said it purchased West Springfield-based G.M. Abodeely Insurance Agency, which will continue operating in its five Massachusetts locations under the same name.

The Glastonbury insurer employs more than 180 people, 120 of which are located in Glastonbury. The firm has offices throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

The companies on Monday said the merger will expand Smith Brothers’ presence in central Massachusetts while allowing G.M. Abodeely to maintain its presence as an independent local agent, leveraging the resources of one of the nation’s top 100 independent brokers.

Smith Brothers inked a similar acquisition in April, purchasing Groton’s Bailey Agencies Insurance to expand its coverage in the southeastern portion of Connecticut. The Groton company has added three employees to Smith Brothers’ offices in Niantic at 377 Main St.

Brothers Bob and Brian Smith founded the firm in Hartford in 1971.
