GKN Aerospace expands in Newington with help of state grant

GKN Aerospace has announced it will expand its facility in Newington, adding a production line for a new engine component made with additive manufacturing technology.

The company will receive a $2.5 million grant from the state’s Strategic Supply Chain Initiative program to help fund the expansion.

U.K.-based GKN has facilities across 12 countries. The company says it chose Connecticut for the expansion because of the proximity to its major customers including Pratt & Whitney, where it is a supplier on the GTF (geared turbofan) engine.

The company made a $50 million investment in 2024 to increase its additive fabrication capacity. Last year it received Federal Aviation Administration approval for its first critical structural component made using the additive fabrication method.

“Retaining and advancing our expertise in (non-destructive testing), fabrication, and welding is critical to GKN Aerospace Newington’s ability to support our customers’ programs,” said Sergio Moren, vice president of North American east site operations at GKN.

GKN also has a facility in Cromwell. It was among the companies that met with a state delegation during the Paris Air Show this summer to discuss state incentives.

“GKN’s expansion is bringing next-generation technology to our state,” said Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Daniel O’Keefe. “Their ongoing investment in Connecticut underscores the important role our state plays in the global aerospace industry.”
