German company acquires Nufern

An East Granby fiber manufacturing company has been acquired by Rofin-Sinar Technologies Inc., a company with headquarters in Michigan and Germany.

The agreement for Rofin-Sinar to acquire Nufern was signed today and is expected to be closed in the first quarter of 2008, though further terms have not been disclosed.

Nufern, founded in 2000, has approximately 70 employees at its East Granby location and is the world’s largest independent manufacturer of specialty fibers and fiber laser modules that are used in the telecommunications, military and defense industries.

Following the acquisition, Nufern will continue to operate as a stand-alone company and continue to provide its products to existing customers. Nufern president Martin Seifert described the move as a milestone for the 7-year-old company and that it will provide Nufern with a strong worldwide presence.
