Gerber’s overseas shift to cost 28 jobs

Tolland technology-equipment maker Gerber Scientific Inc. will shift some operations from Denmark to China to strengthen its customer-support operations there, which will result in shedding some 28 workers, a regulatory filing says.

Gerber said relocating its apparel and industrial segment’s manufacturing operations of computer-automated material spreading systems over the next year or so will save the company about $2 million a year in operating expenses, starting in fiscal 2013, according to its 8-K filing Thursday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Unclear from the filing is whether any of the jobs shed will be at its Tolland corporate headquarters. Gerber relocated corporate headquarters from neighboring South Windsor late last year.

Gerber officials could not be immediately reached Thursday for comment.
