Gerber owner buying Motorola’s broadband business

Private equity firm Vector Capital, which this week closed a deal taking Tolland technology manufacturer Gerber Scientific Inc. private, is buying the wireless broadband businesses from electronics maker Motorola Solutions Inc., The Associated Press reports.

Vector, with offices in Connecticut and New York, plans to close the deal in September.

Vector says it will run the wireless businesses as a standalone company called Cambium Networks.

Phil Bolt, vice president of wireless network solutions for Motorola Solutions, will be CEO of Cambium Networks, the companies said.

Based in Schaumburg, Ill., Motorola Solutions makes police radios, bar code scanners and other products.

Motorola Solutions split in January from Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc.

Google Inc. offered $12.5 billion this month for Motorola Mobility, which makers cellphones, tablet computers and cable set-top boxes and holds more than 17,000 patents.
