Genesee & Wyoming August traffic up 4.1%

The owner of the Connecticut Southern Railroad, which runs south from the Massachusetts border to Hartford and New Haven, said its traffic was up in August.

Genesee & Wyoming Inc., based in Darien, said it hauled 162,101 carloads in August throughout its international network of short line and regional freight railroads in the U.S., Canada, Australia and the Netherlands. That compares to an August 2012 pro forma carload count of 155,746.

Because its August traffic includes that of RailAmerica, acquired in December, G&W used a pro forma number — one that shows what traffic would have been had the acquisition taken place in January 2012 — to provide an accurate year-over-year comparison.
