The oil and gas division of Fairfield conglomerate General Electric received a 22-year, $620-million contract to provide equipment for an Australian natural gas firm.
GE Oil & Gas, which supplies equipment for liquefied natural gas projects, will provide advanced technology and services to the Queensland Curtis plant to turn coal into LNG.
The plant will be the first facility to turn coal seam gas, which is methane trapped in coal, into LNG. Coal seam gas is plentiful in Australia, and the country has plans for four plants to send LNG to China, Japan, and Singapore. Production from the first plant will begin in 2014.
GE will provide equipment, planned and unplanned maintenance, monitoring, and diagnostic services for the plant.
