GE ‘smart meters’ for Ohio demo project

An Ohio utility is buying 110,000 of General Electric‘s “smart meters” to demonstrate the technology’s ability to help consumers monitor household energy use and cut their light bills.

GE Energy will supply the meters to AEP Ohio, a unit of American Electric Power, which will install themin the state’s northeast central region, beginning next year.

The meters will give consumers the information to make informed choices about when and how they use electricity-enabling them to lower their electric bills, GE said.

AEP also installed GE smart meters as part of its smart meter pilot project in South Bend, Ind. In addition to the meter infrastructure, GE also is working with AEP to implement technologies that will improve efficiency and productivity of the grid through improved automation and IT systems.
