GE plans Ohio hybrid research center

Fairfield-based General Electric Co. says its aviation systems division will open a research center outside Dayton, Ohio, focused on hybrid technology for electric-powered aircraft, boats and on- and off-road vehicles.

GE Aviation Systems said the specific location for its planned Electrical Power Integrated Systems Research & Development Center will be announced by year end. The center would begin operations in 2012.

The Ohio Third Frontier Commission is providing a capital grant for up to $7.6 million in support of the center, GE Aviation said.

The University of Dayton Research Institute will work with GE Aviation to develop and deploy cutting-edge computer modeling, simulation and analysis of advanced, dynamic electric power systems design and controls, officials said.

Proximity to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and its Air Force Research Labs was a additional consideration in GE’s decision to locate in the Dayton region, said Vic Bonneau, president of electric power for GE Aviation Systems.
