GE introduces turbine, funds energy storage system

Fairfield conglomerate General Electric introduced a new offshore wind turbine this week while the financial investment arm of the company joined a $14.4 million invester pool for a New Hampshire energy storage innovator.

The new four megawatt wind turbine is designed to increase reliability of offshore turbine and will be installed in a Swedish harbor later this year. GE has contracted with Goteborg Energi of Sweden for the installation.

“It is the only direct-drive wind turbine designed specifically for offshore today,” said Victor Abate, GE Power & Water vice president for renewable energy, in a statement. “With Göteborg Energi we have a great partner and we welcome the support of the local authorities on our project.”

GE Energy Financial Services invested joined in a $14.4 million investment pool for New Hampshire’s SustainX to develop technology for energy storage using compressed air. The money comes from GE Ecomagination Challenge’s Power the Grid program.

“GE’s backing, alongside that of other investors and the federal government, validates our efforts to develop and commercialize a cost-effective, grid-scale energy storage solution,” SustainX CEO Thomas Zarrella said in a statement. “We are on schedule to develop a grid-scale prototype to be demonstrated at an affiliated AES site where we can showcase our transformative energy storage technology.”
