GE exec to lead joint Pratt engine venture

A former General Electric executive has been named president of East Hartford-based Engine Alliance, a 50/50 venture between GE and aerospace manufacturer Pratt & Whitney.

Dean Athans, who comes to Engine Alliance from GE Power & Water Aero Derivatives business, replaces Mary Ellen Jones, who is returning to a senior leadership position at Pratt in East Hartford.

The Engine Alliance is a partnership between Pratt and GE to produce the GP7200 engine for aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and has been selected by other airlines such as Emirates, Air France, Korean Air, Air Austral, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways. Final assembly of the engine is conducted at Pratt’s facility in Middletown.

Athans spent 15 years in GE Aviation’s commercial engines operation, holding leadership roles in customer support and product support. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a master’s degree in business from Babson College.

Jones will take over as Pratt vice president of global customer support and Americas sales. She will remain chairwoman of the Connecticut Airport Authority.

Pratt is a subsidiary of Hartford conglomerate United Technologies Corp.
