Gaylord expands North Haven clinic to include neurological therapy

Gaylord Specialty Healthcare recently celebrated the completion of a $1.3 million expansion of its North Haven outpatient clinic.

The expansion more than doubled Gaylord Therapy Services clinic, located at 8 Devine St. in North Haven, and added neurological therapy services there.

These services aim to help patients recover from physical, cognitive and language challenges due to stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord and brain injury and other neurological conditions.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 10, members of the Gaylord community, the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce and Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce were on hand to celebrate the expansion. The event included tours of the facility, along with staff members demonstrating many of the clinic’s new rehab technologies, including the ZeroG overhead body-weight support gait and balance system and the AlterG anti-gravity treadmill.

The expansion into the adjacent former HealthTrax Fitness and Wellness Center more than doubled the previous treatment space from 5,000 square feet to 12,500 square feet. Gaylord officials said the expansion was prompted by an increased demand for a broader range of rehabilitation services in Connecticut.

Gaylord is a rehabilitation-focused nonprofit that provides both inpatient and outpatient care.

Prior to the expansion, the North Haven clinic solely offered orthopedic therapy services.

New technologies also were added to improve patients’ function and strength. Patients can walk or run on a zero-gravity treadmill at a fraction of their body weight, for example.

“When recovering from a life-altering illness or injury, people seek out Gaylord knowing that our rehabilitation expertise will help them recover to the fullest extent possible,” said Gaylord Vice President of Clinical Operations Peter Grevelding.

Gaylord officials said since the expanded clinic opened in North Haven, four additional positions were created to handle the increased demand for services.

The project was completed by Pennsylvania-based Wohlsen Construction, which has offices in Connecticut and throughout New England.

In addition to the Wallingford outpatient location on the Gaylord Hospital campus, Gaylord operates four outpatient satellite locations in Cheshire, Cromwell, Madison and North Haven. North Haven and Wallingford are the only two locations that provide both outpatient neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation services.
