FuelCell touts Calif. clean incentive

Danbury-based FuelCell Energy Inc. says it stands to benefit from California’s extension of clean-energy incentives to promote efficient, low-emissions power generators of the kind it makes.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed legislation that extends the availability of incentives for clean energy technologies through 2015.

Approximately 15 megawatts of FuelCell Energy’s power plant equipment in California have received support since the program’s inception in 2001, FuelCell said. More than 9 megawatts, or about 60 percent of FuelCell Energy’s products in California, use renewable biogas as their fuel.

“California has always led the way in the deployment of clean energy technologies,” said Jeff Cox, senior policy advisor for FuelCell Energy.

Qualified fuel cell projects with up to 3 megawatts of capacity are eligible for incentives of $4,500 per kilowatt when running on renewable biogas and $2,500 per kilowatt when operating on natural gas.

The incentive amounts are tiered, with the first megawatt receiving 100 percent of the incentive, the second megawatt receiving 50 percent and the third 25 percent.
