FuelCell shrinking its energy technology

FuelCell Energy Inc. in Danbury is teaming with its South Korean partner POSCO Power on a small-scale fuel cell stack mainly aimed at Asia’s rapidly growing commercial-building sector.

POSCO initially is putting up half the $5.8 million tab to design and build a power-generating stack of fuel cells small enough to fit inside office and residential buildings using its Connecticut partner’s Direct FuelCell brand of power generators.

The fuel cells use an electrochemical process to convert wastewater gas, biogas and natural gas and hydrocarbons into electricity. The process does not involve combustion, which renders operation of the cell stacks quiet and nearly free of pollutants.

FuelCell’s core lineup of generators are larger units mostly for industrial and utility applications.

In addition to holding an equity stake in FuelCell Energy, POSCO is the Danbury firm’s primary sales agent and distributor for Direct FuelCell technology in Asia.
