FuelCell pairs with Exxon on carbon capture

Danbury-based FuelCell Energy said Thursday that it has inked an agreement with oil and gas giant Exxon Mobil to develop carbon-capture technology for power plants.

The technology would use carbonate fuel cells to capture harmful emissions from power plant stacks.

The two companies will work for one or two years to increase efficiency in separating CO2 from turbine exhaust. Depending on various milestones, the work will continue with more comprehensive testing in a small-scale pilot project and then a larger-scale pilot project, the companies said.

FuelCell announced in February that it partnered with Cenovous Energy to complete preliminary design and engineering work for siting a fuel cell system to capture carbon dioxide from flue emissions at a cogeneration plant at the University of Calgary in Alberta.
