FuelCell installing system at New Haven port

Danbury clean power manufacturer FuelCell Energy will install a 2.8 megawatt fuel cell system near the port of New Haven, as part of a larger deal with Orange utility United Illuminating.

In April, FuelCell announced a 5.6 megawatt deal with UI to install two fuel cell systems in Bridgeport and a site to be determined. On Monday, the company said New Haven will be the second site.

The New Haven fuel cell will be located in the New Haven port area near an electrical substation owned by UI, so that the fuel cell can provide continuous power to the substation. Fuel cells produce negligible greenhouse gas emissions because they generate power using an electrochemical process the requires no combustion.

The previously announced Bridgeport fuel cell will go in that city’s nine-acre renewable energy park, along with a 2.2 megawatt solar array.
