Corporation America is taking a greater interest in generating power via onsite fuel cells, a major industry in Connecticut.
Washington, D.C. industry group Fuel Cells 2000 released a survey on Tuesday showing 34 corporate customers have installed, deployed or purchased more than 250 fuel cell power systems for their facilities in the past year, totaling more than 30 megawatts of power.
Fuel cell manufacturing is a major industry in Connecticut, and some of the industry’s leading companies call the state home including South Windsor-based UTC Power, Danbury-based FuelCell Energy, Inc., and Wallingford-based Proton Onsite. Connecticut is also home to fuel cell suppliers.
The companies leading the increase in fuel cell deployment were high-end grocer Whole Foods, which has a fuel cell at its Glastonbury store; retail store chain Walmart; and beverage maker Coca-Cola.
In addition to the 250 fuel cell systems installed in the past year, more than 1,000 fuel cell forklifts were purchased.
