Fuel cell maker HyAxiom announces 67 layoffs

Connecticut’s fuel cell industry continues to face challenges.

East Hartford-based fuel cell company HyAxiom Inc. has notified the state Department of Labor it will lay off 67 workers in its South Windsor and East Hartford locations.

It’s the second workforce reduction for the company this year.

HyAxiom, which is owned by the South Korean company Doosan Fuel Cell Co., announced another round of job cuts this past spring.

Meantime, on Friday, Danbury-based FuelCell Energy Inc. announced that it reduced its workforce by 17% amid significant recent financial struggles.

In its Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification to the state labor department, HyAxiom said its latest round of layoffs will occur on Jan. 13 and Feb. 13. The job cuts will impact 49 employees at HyAxiom’s South Windsor manufacturing plant, at 90 Bidwell Drive, and 18 employees at the company’s East Hartford corporate office, 101 East River Drive.

None of the employees are unionized and the layoffs are expected to be permanent, the company said.

HyAxiom’s parent company, Doosan, recently reported a nearly 30% drop in third quarter sales, which contributed to an operating loss.

HyAxiom also announced layoffs in November 2023.
