Fuel cell industry aims for 1,200MW regional deployment

Members of the New England fuel cell industry are meeting on Oct. 29 at Western New England University to discuss the best ways to install 1,200 megawatts throughout the region.

The Northeast Electrochemical Energy Storage Cluster is planning the regional workshop to discuss strategies for the development and implementation of state roadmaps to help with state policy, market development, and hydrogen cars.

The cluster has identified the potential to install more than 1,200 megawatts of fuel cell capacity in the region, plus put another 271,000 hydrogen cars and 13,000 hydrogen buses on the road.

The initial goals call for deploying 227 megawatts of fuel cells by 2025, and building 140 hydrogen fueling stations for cars.

Connecticut is home to the two largest fuel cell companies in the world: FuelCell Energy in Danbury and Doosan Fuel Cell America in South Windsor. The state also is the headquarters for companies like Wallingford-based Proton Onsite, which develops technology for fuel cells and hydrogen cars and has a hydrogen fueling station at its property.
