Frito-Lay builds environmental gold in Killingly

The Frito-Lay facility in Killingly is the first existing manufacturing building in Connecticut to achieve LEED gold status from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The PepsiCo subsidiary received the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, or LEED, award on Tuesday for reducing waste and natural gas consumption while recycling all but 1 percent of its materials.

“Frito-Lay’s certification shows tremendous leadership in greening an existing building, which makes up the vast majority of the U.S. building stock,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO & founding chair of the U.S. Green Building Council, in a press release. “Greening our existing buildings helps save money and energy, creates healthier places to live, work and learn – all while addressing our single greatest opportunity to help solve the climate change equation.”

The Texas-based food manufacturer retrofitted the 31-year-old building in Connecticut with green designs and construction, as well as water reduction.
