Franchise owner eyes Newington Dunkin’ in former bank space

An area franchise operator is planning to open another Dunkin’ eatery in Newington by converting a former bank building complete with drive-thru window.

Cedar Street LLC principal Cary Gagnon, who operates more than 20 Dunkin’ restaurants throughout Connecticut, is seeking to convert the former Sovereign Bank building at 79 East Cedar St., Newington, into a new coffee shop location.

The applicant said the majority of the construction planned on the 2,160-square-foot building is for the interior, with just new landscaping, signage and some parking modifications outside.

“The proposed restaurant use fits in well with the existing surrounding neighborhood businesses,” the applicant said, “ with adequate room for traffic circulation,” especially around the existing drive-thru window.

According to the Dunkin’ company website, Newington has four existing Dunkin’ stores open and operating, including one at 548 Cedar St. One location on the Berlin Turnpike listed as closed.

The building is owned by Newington Sovereign Bank Plaza LLC.
