Foxwoods closing down casino during week

Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket will close down one of its six casinos during the week to save money on personnel during the less busy times, according to a memo sent to a union representing Foxwoods employees.

The move will lead to casino layoffs, but the union has not been notified of the exact numbers or the timing, said Billy Shea, president of the Local 2121 of the International Union, United Automomobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America. The union typically is given 30 days notice of any pending layoffs.

Foxwoods will close the Rainmaker Casino during the week, which it originally opened with in 1992. The resort operates five other casino floors on its property including the recently renamed Fox Tower Casino, which used to be the MGM Grand casino before Foxwoods and MGM severed ties in October.

The memo was not clear whether all or just a portion of the slot machines in the Rainmaker Casino will be closed during the week along with table games like craps, roulette, and blackjack, Shea said, but he assumed they all would be closed off.

The closure will go into effect June 9. The casino will be closed from 4 a.m. Monday to 9 a.m. Friday and reopen for the weekends.

Foxwoods officials did not immediately return calls for comment Thursday morning.

The closure comes amid falling gaming revenues for the Mashantucket property. On Thursday, Foxwoods reported its April slot revenues were off 10.5 percent from last year.
