Foxwoods’ beverage workers OK union

Bartenders, beverage servers and other workers at the Foxwoods Resort Casino have again voted to be represented by a union, paving the way for contract talks to begin under tribal law, The Associated Press reports.

Workers at the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation voted last July in favor of having union representation, handing a victory to the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

But Foxwoods appealed those results because that election was supervised by the National Labor Relations Board, which Foxwoods alleged infringed on tribal sovereignty. Monday’s vote was supervised by the Mashantucket Pequot tribe.

The tribe said in a statement it expected negotiations to begin under tribal law in the coming weeks.

But a National Labor Relations Board spokesman says a federal appeals court judge still has to decide whether federal or tribal law prevails.
