A plan to erect a fourth self-storage building on a 4-acre Extra Space Storage property in Stamford has gotten its second and final required approval from the city.
Salt Lake City-based Extra Space Storage, doing business as ESS Prisa LLC, plans to build a 28,404-square-foot, three-story structure at 35 Commerce Road with 522 storage units. The facility will be built on the southern part of the parcel oriented toward Commerce Road, according to an application filed with the city.
ESS Prisa LLC is controlled by Extra Space Storage Chief Legal Officer Gwyn McNeal, Chief Financial Officer Scott Stubbs and Vice President of Legal Kirk Grimshaw, according to state records.
The city’s Planning Board voted unanimously in favor of the plan in late May. The three-member Zoning Board also gave a unanimous approval Monday night, but required, among other things, that the building have 65 parking spaces, including 22 for bicycles, and 16 street trees.
The Extra Space Storage property currently consists of a two-story, 44,160-square-foot building built in 1953; a two-story, 48,930-square-foot structure constructed in 1980s; and a three-story, 28,050-square-foot building built in 2001. These three buildings have a total of 975 units on the property, which is in the area of Commerce Road, Harvard Avenue and West Main Street.
As of March 31, 2025, Extra Space Storage owned or operated 4,099 self-storage properties in 43 states that provide a total of about 315 million square feet of space across 2.8 million units, according to its website. There are Extra Space Storage locations in 34 towns across Connecticut.
