Former prosecutor Sullivan joins McCarter & English

David X. Sullivan, a former assistant U.S. attorney for Connecticut and a 2020 Republican challenger to Democratic U.S. Rep. Jahana Hayes, has joined the business litigation group at McCarter & English as a partner in the firm’s Hartford and Stamford offices.

In a statement, the firm said Sullivan’s decades of experience investigating and prosecuting financial crimes, including money laundering, bank fraud and wire fraud, would provide clients “with a solid understanding of litigation strategy in federal civil and criminal jury and bench trials.”

“David is highly regarded in Connecticut and throughout the country, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to our team,” said Thomas J. Finn, chair of McCarter & English’s business litigation unit. “He has an impressive track record and his unique background in money laundering and asset forfeiture greatly adds to our capabilities to serve our clients in the financial services sector in compliance, investigations and complex litigation.”

Sullivan served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Connecticut for 30 years before retiring in 2019. He played a key role in efforts to improve intra-agency communications on money laundering and asset forfeiture policies and headed a national asset forfeiture unit.

“McCarter has a tremendous reputation in the courts for being fair but tenacious advocates for their clients, which is a great fit for me,” Sullivan said. “I look forward to working and collaborating with my new colleagues to resolve issues for organizations, particularly in the financial sector.”

Sullivan, running as a Republican with a staunch law-and-order platform, campaigned for Connecticut’s 5th District seat in Congress in the 2020 elections. He lost to Hayes, the incumbent.
