Former pol hired as Connecticare chief counsel

Farmington health insurer Connecticare has hired Sam Caliguri, a former acting mayor of Waterbury and state senator, as its new senior vice president and general counsel.

Caliguri, who served as a state senator from 2007 to 2011, will lead ConnectiCare’s legal and government relations departments, with responsibility for all legal and regulatory matters. He also served as deputy legal counsel in the office Gov. John G. Rowland from 1995 to 1997. His legislative work included service as the ranking member on the General Assembly’s Insurance and Real Estate Committee and as a member of the Regulations Review Committee.

Michael Wise, president and CEO of ConnectiCare, said Caliguri was hired for his background in insurance law and Connecticut state government. Caligiuri has represented clients across the insurance industry in various regulatory and transactional matters. He is also a former adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law.
