The owner of the decommissioned Connecticut Yankee nuclear power plant in Haddam has agreed to remove a barrier that has blocked boaters and fisherman from accessing a manmade canal to the Connecticut River for more than a year, according to the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection.
Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Co. removed the longtime barrier in 2007 when the plant, which is still storage place for spent nuclear fuel, was fully decommissioned.
But the company reinstalled the barrier after getting state approval to do so in late 2013, citing security concerns.
CY’s agreement with DEEP calls for the barrier to be removed once the owners can install “land-based security measures,” which should take about three months. DEEP will also post notices forbidding hunting on adjacent land.
The plant would be able to reinstall the barrier under certain conditions, though DEEP did not detail them.
