Former Meriden Catholic school sells for $225,000, eyed for events venue

A former Catholic school in downtown Meriden has sold for $225,000 to a local business owner who plans to convert the property into an events venue.

In a deed recorded March 23, Venue by Meriden Party Rentals LLC, led by Carlos Nieves, purchased the 19,020-square-foot building at 97 Grove St. The three-story structure, built in 1890, previously housed St. Mary’s Catholic School.

The seller, Pentecostal Church of God IM of Meriden Inc., bought the school building and a neighboring church property for $275,000 in 2019.

Nieves, who owns Meriden Party Rentals, said he is using the Grove Street building for storage while preparing to seek city approvals to convert it into a venue for weddings, birthdays and other events.

Meriden Party Rentals operates out of a 3,284-square-foot office building that the Pentecostal Church of God IM of Meriden sold to a separate Nieves-led LLC in 2019.

Nieves said his business employs 10 people and could add several more if the events space moves forward.
